Cambodia: Celebrating Christian Initiation

RCIA step 2 (ទទួលជំហានទី២) in Battambang Prefecture, Cambodia.

It was a big celebration and a joyous occasion for all the Christian faithful in the Prefecture of Battambang, especially for the 61 young adults whose names were officially enrolled for baptism in the Catholic Church. They have been prepared and given faith formation in their respective parishes for a period of one year before they are promoted to the next step which is the Rite of Election or Enrolment of Names for those who are unbaptized (and the Rite of Calling the Candidates to Continuing Conversion for those who are baptized).

This is a very significant and important step in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adult Baptism because on that day the Church formally ratifies the Catechumens’ readiness for the Sacraments of Initiation, and the Candidates’ readiness to be received into full Communion with the Catholic Church. In turn the Catechumens – from now on known as the Elect – publicly acknowledge their desire to receive the Sacraments of Initiation, and the Candidates’ desire to be received into full Communion with the Catholic Church.

The Eucharistic celebration started at 8:30 in the morning. Msgr. Kike Figaredo, the prefect Apostolic was the main celebrant and homilist. The Vicar general with Five other Priests from different parishes concelebrated. The joy and happiness of the 61 youth & adults (enrolled-for baptism) are evident from their smiles as they knelt before the altar symbolically receiving the cross from the local ordinary and the concelebrant Priests with words of encouragement and prayers. They will be baptised in their respective parishes during the Easter Vigil or Easter Sunday masses.

It was indeed a memorable and joyous occasion for the whole Christian community of Battambang Prefecture. St. John Catholic Church in Siem Reap enrolled 10 young adults for baptism. Let us continue to pray for them.
