On January 6th, we officially began our assembly at the Mill Hill House in Bamenda, bringing together Mill Hillers from the various parishes where we serve. The assembly was graced by the presence of Fr. Gerry Hastie, Vicar and Councillor for Europe.
As is customary, we started with a recollection session led by Fr. Michelle, centered on the theme “Priesthood: A Pilgrimage of Hope.” Fr. Michelle encouraged us to reflect on stepping back and recognizing that God’s will is greater than our own plans and projections. Drawing inspiration from Joseph in the Old Testament, he reminded us that God’s will can sometimes lead us through challenges to help us encounter Him more profoundly. We were also reminded to trust in God, as He desires us to become the truest version of ourselves and nothing else.
From Monday to Thursday, we listened to one another’s stories, shared experiences, and encouraged one another in our mission. Cameroon, being a young region with 95% of its members under the age of 40, faces many challenges, including team building, lack of transportation, and significant insecurity caused by ongoing political and social unrest. Despite the difficulties, the members’ passion for their mission and love for the people they serve shine brightly. They continue to dedicate themselves fully to their work, often placing their own safety at risk in order to bring hope, comfort, and the Gospel to their communities.
The assembly was also a time of laughter and bonding. Every evening, we gathered as one family to play cards and socialize, creating cherished moments together.
What made this assembly unique was the ample time set aside to genuinely listen to each other’s stories. Adding to the uniqueness was the presence of Fr. Gerry, who was visiting Cameroon for the very first time. His presence was a source of encouragement to all, as he witnessed firsthand the members’ unwavering commitment to their mission, even in the face of adversity.
