Bishop George Nkuo of the Catholic Diocese of Kumbo in Cameroon has spoken out against the recent violence that erupted during Cameroon’s National Youth Day celebrations. The attack, which resulted in the death of at least one person and left many injured, took place in Nkambe town. Additionally, there was a disruption of Holy Mass at Christ the King Jakiri Parish, an act condemned by Bishop Nkuo.
Describing the incident, Bishop Nkuo recounted that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated at the Nkambe ceremonial grounds where youths had gathered to celebrate National Youth Day. He strongly denounced the violence, labelling it as “heinous and senseless,” and emphasized the sanctity of public and spiritual gatherings, as well as the sacred spaces of Churches and Hospitals.
The disruption of the Eucharistic celebration was particularly distressing for Bishop Nkuo, who highlighted the significance of the Mass as a sacred occasion for worship and spiritual nourishment. He emphasized that such disruptions not only disrespect the sanctity of the Mass but also infringe upon the rights and freedom of religious expression.
In his statement, Bishop Nkuo called for unity against brutality and affirmed the commitment to peace, justice, and compassion. He extended condolences to the family of Cherish Lemnyuy, the university student who lost her life in the attack, and urged prayers, love, and support for all those affected.
Addressing the armed groups perpetrating violence, Bishop Nkuo appealed for reflection and urged them to allow the population to go about their activities without hindrance. He emphasized the importance of sincere dialogue in bringing an end to the crisis in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, which have been embroiled in conflict since 2016.
