A FATHER, A PASTOR, A MENTOR – CARDINAL STEPHEN BRISLIN’S INSTALLATION.

I was there!

No one takes this honour on himself but is received when called by God… (Hebrews 5:4)
St Benedict’s Catholic Secondary School was packed with thousands of people – the faithful, the clergy.
The singing was exhilarating – trust South African music, vibrating, harmonious and rhythmic.
From the diocese of Kroonstad and from other clergy, tickets were available for those who wanted to attend.
It was a privilege to attend, to witness, to muse and marvel the gracious assumption of responsibility of a my former bishop of Kroonstad Diocese, a mentor, a father, a pastor, so outstanding in listening, compassion, diligence and non-threatening presence.
People naturally shy away from robust zealous condescending, complacent or ambitious leaders, whether church, traditional or political. They submit for a while.
Not with Bishop or Archbishop or Cardinal Stephen Brislin who listens and feels with – empathy, companion, merciful like the Father…
His predecessor, Archbishop Buti Joseph Tlhagale preached mainly about the poverty, inequality and suffering of people on Johannesburg in dire need of evangelization and salvation.
Cardinal Stephen himself, understandably overwhelmed by both the joy and the call, only had gratitude to express, but also boldly named and urged the continuous need to witness and live synodal and moral lives.
His motto has been VERITAS IN CARITATIS – Truth in charity.
so apt for a compassionate pastor, mentor, father and friend.
God bless the Church in South Africa, Africa and the world over.
God bless and preserve our leaders, servants and princes with health, graces and dedication;with joy, love and compassion.
