Church in Africa: Financial Transparency a Challenge

“We have been auditing our accounts for a long time but it is expensive and very prohibitive for Dioceses that do not have money; so, you have to do it with persons who may not be the best in the market,” the Kenyan Archbishop said.

“Disclosure can also be dangerous in certain environments,” Archbishop said during the February 11 webinar, and explained, “While being transparent, and while explaining as much as should be reasonable, we also have faced difficulties especially in an environment of corruption.”

He continued, “There are some hawks who will take the opportunity, upon knowing your assets and about some of your initiatives to try and influence or wrestle them from you or demand unreasonable and disproportionate amounts from you depending on what you have said.”
