DR Congo: A Glimpse at its Troubled History
Protestant missionaries, Alice and her husband John Harris, established the Baringa mission station in 1898. Mrs Harris documented the atrocities committed by the agents of King Leopold II of Belgium – the infamous ‘Red Rubber’ forced labour campaign. Her photographic testimony was the trigger that set in motion a determined effort to put an end these unspeakable practices. The first Mill Hill missionaries arrived in the area in 1905.
