We are saddened to share the news of the passing of Paddy Phelan (brother of Fr. Bernard Phelan, MHM), a founding member of SPICMA and its honorary director until his retirement in 2022 due to ill health. This announcement comes from his daughter, Naomi Phelan, who reflects on his remarkable life of service and commitment.
Paddy dedicated his life to supporting missionaries and communities around the world. He worked closely with many clergy and volunteers, often seen at St. Joseph’s, organizing and packing shipments alongside Brother Hans, who ran the bookshop. Many student priests offered their support over the years—some of whom may remember helping at the Phelan family home in Loughton.
Paddy was a humble and devoted man who believed deeply in service to others, especially the marginalized. Though he rarely sought recognition, his nomination for the Knight of St. Gregory the Great (KSG)—which he modestly would have been surprised by—was a testament to his unwavering dedication.
