I am writing to share with you an important and deeply moving pastoral letter recently issued by the bishops of the Diocese of Phoenix, titled “In Solidarity with the Stranger”, dated June 20, 2025. The letter addresses the ongoing migrant situation in the United States, particularly in light of recent ICE operations that have caused fear and distress among immigrant communities.
This pastoral statement is a heartfelt call to recognize and affirm the dignity of every human person, especially our migrant brothers and sisters. The bishops remind us that many of these individuals are not strangers to us in faith—they are fellow parishioners, neighbors, and members of the Body of Christ. The letter echoes the words of Our Lord: “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” It reminds us that discipleship demands compassionate action, not passive observation.
The bishops also highlight the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform—one that is rooted not in fear, but in justice and mercy. They call on every Catholic parish, school, and institution to respond with pastoral care, public prayer, peaceful advocacy, and spiritual solidarity. The tone of the letter is both courageous and compassionate, encouraging us to walk alongside the vulnerable and to entrust our efforts to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and Refuge of Migrants.
