The Local Young Members Meeting of the India Region of the Mill Hill Missionaries, held in Bangalore from 11th to 15th March, was a well-balanced and meaningful gathering that combined reflection, formation, sharing, and fraternity.
We began with a day of recollection animated by Fr. Joe Mannath, SDB, whose long experience in leadership, formation, and counselling gave depth to the day. He reminded the members that much of our character is already shaped within our families before we enter formation. Formation, therefore, is not about adding something entirely new, but about becoming aware, honest, and open to growth. He stressed that without openness, there can be no real transformation. Through guided questions, he led the members to reflect seriously on their journey of human development, underlining that the most fundamental goal in life is to become better human beings.
In the afternoon, Fr. Bernie offered a focused input on the care of members and associates, renewal programmes, teamwork, mutual support, and safeguarding. His input was practical and grounded, addressing the real demands of missionary life. This was followed by a session on the Missionary Spirituality of our Society by Fr. Sleevaraj, who helped the members reconnect with the core vision and spirit that sustain our missionary identity.
A significant part of the meeting was dedicated to personal sharing. This year, we made a deliberate decision to give more time for this. The session extended beyond the planned schedule, but it was the right call. The quality of sharing made that clear. Members spoke honestly about their joys, struggles, challenges, and hopes. It created a space of trust where listening became as important as speaking. The atmosphere was marked by respect, encouragement, and genuine support. This was one of the strongest moments of the entire gathering.
This was followed by group discussions on the Pre-Convocation Reflection for the General Chapter. The members engaged seriously with the process, and the concerns of the young members were articulated and presented clearly. This ensured that their voice is part of the wider discernment of the Society.
The final day provided space for fraternity and relaxation. The outing in Bangalore helped strengthen bonds among the members. Visits to St. Mary’s Church in Shivajinagar, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, and Snow City brought a good mix of reflection, recreation, and simple enjoyment. The day concluded with a fellowship meal, which once again became a space for informal sharing and deepening relationships.
In conclusion, the meeting was not just an event but a process. It helped the members to pause, reflect, speak honestly, and reconnect with one another and with the mission. It reinforced the importance of human maturity, mutual support, and shared responsibility in missionary life. If there is one clear takeaway, it is this: when space is created for honest sharing and attentive listening, real growth happens. That is what we need to protect and build on moving forward.
