‘Jerusalema’: Afro-pop with a message

“Jerusalema”, a song which combines a cry to heaven in the Zulu language with Afro-pop rhythms has become a worldwide hit and “dance challenge” all over the world.

It was written in December 2019 against the backdrop of the global coronavirus pandemic. Its words sound like a prayer to God for protection and an evocation of the heavenly Jerusalem.

In February 2020 the Angolan dance group ‘Fenomenos Do Semba’ posted a humorous rendition of the song holding plates with food. It went viral.

In July, Italian Franciscans even reinterpreted one of their songs, replacing the original music with Jerusalema. The video showing these religious performing the choreography of the worldwide hit also went viral.
