As the sun rose on Saturday, May 4th, 2024, the streets of Mbikko- Njeru highway and Njeru Busana highway were abuzz with excitement and anticipation as our community gathered for a marathon with a noble purpose. Organized by Mbikko Parish by the Patronage of Fr. Andrew Mukulu and Fr. Rogers, the Assistant Parish Priest, to raise funds for welcoming pilgrims journeying from the East to Namugongo for the commemoration of the Uganda Martyrs on June 3rd, the event was a testament to the spirit of solidarity and compassion that binds us together as a community of faith.
Under the unifying theme of ‘to love and to serve ‘, participants of all ages and backgrounds, from seasoned athletes to those joining in the spirit of camaraderie, laced up their running shoes. This diverse group embarked on a journey of both physical and spiritual significance, knowing that every step taken would make a difference in the lives of those undertaking the pilgrimage.
As the race unfolded, it became clear that our collective efforts were not just about crossing the finish line. They were about embodying the values of charity and stewardship towards our Mother Earth. While the top runners were rightfully celebrated for their athletic prowess, the true spirit of generosity shone through as I and my group of youths distributed trees to all participants, regardless of their age and location.Â
This act symbolized our commitment to environmental stewardship and served as a tangible reminder of our interconnectedness with creation and our responsibility to care for it. With each sapling entrusted to our care, we were challenged to nurture and protect nature’s gifts, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
Still, our efforts continued. Each participant who received a tree was registered, enabling us to follow up and ensure they fulfil their pledge to plant and care for their seedlings. This commitment to accountability underscores our dedication to making a lasting impact, one tree at a time.
I am humbled and grateful for the overwhelming support we received from our community and beyond. Together, we have demonstrated the power of collective action and the transformative potential of love in action.
In the spirit of the Uganda Martyrs, whose unwavering faith and sacrifice continue to inspire us, let us continue to journey together, united in our commitment to justice, compassion, and stewardship of all of God’s creation. May our efforts today pave the way for a future where love, compassion, and environmental stewardship flourish abundantly.
