As missionaries working in different parts of the world, we communicate daily in various ways and other languages. In today’s digital age, much of our interaction occurs through online platforms. While technology has undoubtedly made communication faster and more accessible, it also raises the important question of how we are communicating with one another. Are we fostering genuine connections, or are we merely exchanging information without proper understanding? The challenge lies in ensuring that our digital communication remains as human as possible, rooted in respect and meaningful dialogue, despite the impersonal nature of the medium.

In his recent message to the participants of the Ecclesial Conference of the Amazon (CEAMA) in Manaus, Brazil, Paolo Ruffini, the Prefect of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication, emphasized the words of Pope Francis for the World Day of Social Communications. He highlighted the importance of “the wisdom of the heart” in fostering human communication.
Ruffini highlights the role of communication in uniting people while respecting cultural differences, presenting it as a “mutual gift” that connects individuals through dialogue and understanding. He also addresses the need for humane communication to counter the negative impacts of mass media, advocating for a communication system rooted in humanity, spirituality, and care for the “common home.” The assembly itself, a result of the 2019 Synod for the Pan-Amazonian region, served as a platform for Church representatives from various Amazonian countries to discuss themes of communion, mission, and participation in light of upcoming synodal sessions.
