Memories of the Pandemic: Disruption of Every Plan

(Two, Three, Five Months on)

In Hope we were Saved! Romans 8:24.

Now is the time… to slow down, …to decipher a plague, …to stop wars, …to love and to serve more!

A time for an end which is another beginning – not that there is anything new – well, everything new, including the virus!

A time of spiritual, economic, emotional, physical, global orientation, disorientation and re-orientation. (Walter Brueggemann)

A time to take stock, apart from panic shopping for fear of apocalyptic catastrophes or Armageddon!

A time to take stock of the real meaning of human life, human destiny, human existence and God – to wonder and not wander, to seek not to lose, to save not to betray, to heal not to kill, to hope not to despair, to bless not to curse.

A time to refrain from bars, restaurants, stadia, gyms, schools and fun clubs – our towers of babel, for: Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering. Saint Augustine.

A time of disruption par excellence!

A time for a new and renewed beginning, a time for proper prophesy and wisdom from above – not far from the call to lose yourself, take up your cross and follow the Master; for “we are experiencing an eschatological eclipse concerning the four last things – death, heaven, hell, purgatory.” (Joseph Ratzinger).

From the prophesies of Fatima, through Apocalyptic predictions, to climate and Salvific echoes: “mankind has succeeded in unleashing a cycle of death and terror, but failed in bringing it to an end…there is no way we can possibly continue as before; mankind stands at a crossroad; it is time for reflection; time for change; time for conversion; so many problems that all have to be solved but that will not all be solved unless God stands in the center and becomes visible in the world.” (Light of the World, 2010, Preface, p.xix, 166.)

A time to transcend any sentimental, Pentecostal or psychological predictions or brainwash! For we all hear the resentment towards Holy Howlers!

A time to see how stale, illusive and distasteful rhetoric, power, ideologies and sentiments can turn out or boil down to!

A time for atheists to rediscover faith, and evil doers and the robust to have their consciences pricked, “Come back to me with all your heart, don’t let fear keep us apart; trees do bend though straight and tall, so must we to others call: Long have I waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our new life…” For “The first swallow from the cup of natural sciences makes atheists – but at the bottom of the cup God is waiting.”  (Nuclear Physicist, Werner Heisenberg).

A time to know that: If God does not punish this generation, he owes an apology to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah; since the world is not so much a playground as a battlefield. (cited by Scott Hahn).  Does God punish? And what if God allows evil, evolution, various consequences and implications on the one hand, and on the other, suffers and dies with us, with creation, for love and out of love – for redemption and recreation?

A time to laud, applaud and pray for the medical, scientific and technological personnel even as they bow and tremble at unfolding realities that are physical, mystical and mysterious, like the big bang that had to be ordered!

A time to pray and care as never before, especially if we only celebrated, preserved and glorified ourselves before and were self-absorbed and entertained even in Churches, as if Jesus/God was not there.

A time of disruption par excellence!

A time of panic, uncertainty, of worship in spirit and in truth, of solidarity in suffering and death.

A time to face our illnesses, disabilities, sins and limitations as never before.

A time to collaborate with research and medicine – a time to revive and survive!

Now is the time to self-isolate, to quarantine, to “monasticize”, to fast, to abstain!

Now is the time as at Fatima 103 years ago to believe, to adore, to love, to hope in the Eucharist!

A time to think, refrain, to prioritize, to work from home, to exercise!

Now is the time to turn wholeheartedly to our God from our gods!

Now is the time of Pope Francis’ dream of a Church on the streets of the homes and hospitals, wounded as in the battlefield with the injured or with the gods of diseases!   A time for mercy!

A time to consider the sicknesses and curses of our own making, of God allowing and of demons menacing!

A time to fight our other viruses of hatred, power, conflicts, pleasure, violence, money, sex, negativity, anger – sin.

A time for dictators, freedom fighters, witchdoctors, occultists, murderers, sports fans, street/temple workers, sects, liturgical/physical/sexual/spiritual/emotional abuses, media, legislation, scientists, singers, buyers/sellers, Church leaders… to step back, to curb their pride.  A time of disruption par excellence!

A time for family – nuclear, bigger and wider!

A time for peace! A time to be human, not animal or robot or idiot!

A real time, please God, for moral, climate, intellectual, decent awakening!

A time of salvific acclimatization and ultra-safeguarding!

And when it stops turning and spinning, may our heads all be facing the right direction, alive or dead – of love!

MISSIO: Prayer for those affected by coronavirus

“God our Father, we pray for those who are suffering, for those who are grieving, for those who are anxious, and for those who are working tirelessly to care for the sick.  God our Father, your Son Jesus Christ came into our world to heal us of all division and bring us life in abundance. By the power of your Spirit help us strive together as one family of many nations to help those in greatest need during this crisis.  We ask this in the name of Jesus our Risen Lord.  Amen”
