A Journey of Reflection, Unity and Renewal
From January 13th to January 17th, 2025, the Mill Hill Missionaries in India came together for their Annual Assembly at the Pallottine Animation Centre in Nagpur. This much-awaited gathering was a special time for reflection, spiritual growth, learning, and collaboration. The sessions were facilitated by Rev. Fr. Sebasti L. Raj SJ, who shared his wisdom and insights, making the discussions and activities meaningful.
The Regional Representative, Fr. Tomvenki Yellavula, warmly welcomed all the members, emphasizing the importance of the assembly in fostering unity and spiritual renewal. To begin the event, Fr. Emmanuel Nzenze introduce the facilitator, Fr. Sebasti. Following this, Frs. Sebasti, Devadas, and Sleevaraj lit the traditional oil lamp, a sacred act symbolising God’s presence as the source of all life and creation. This simple ritual reminded everyone of the guidance of the Holy Spirit that sustains their mission.
The day continued with a recollection talk by Fr. Sebasti, focusing on the synodal spirit. He spoke about the need for unity in the Church and how synodal spirituality encourages collaboration. He reminded everyone that each member is called to serve as a prophetic voice, nurturing relationships with God, one another, and all creation. This inspiring message set the tone for the gathering. Later, members had time for confessions, followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to safeguarding, a key issue for the Church and our Mill Hill Society. Fr. Sebasti gave an enlightening talk on government of India’s policies for protecting children and vulnerable adults, explaining how the Catholic Church aligns with these efforts. He stressed the importance of education and proactive measures to prevent abuse, particularly concerning children and women, reaffirming the Church’s commitment to justice and compassion.
Afterwards, the Bursar, Fr. Dilip, presented a session on the financial situation of the Indian Region. This allowed members to ask questions and ensured transparency and accountability in managing resources.
On the second day, Fr. Sebasti led a session on “Ecclesial Discernment for Mission.” He explained how decision-making in the Church must be rooted in trust, transparency, and accountability. He emphasised that discernment is a continuous process, requiring regular reflection inspired by the Gospel. Following this, the members discussed various issues affecting the Indian Region, working together to find solutions. The collaborative discussions strengthened their sense of shared responsibility and commitment to the mission.
Fr. Yellavula thanked everyone for their active participation, while Fr. Mathews Olili expressed gratitude to Fr. Sebasti for his insightful guidance on safeguarding and decision-making.
On the third day, members took a break from the discussions and visited the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Seminary Hills. This peaceful outing provided time for prayer and reflection. Later, they enjoyed fellowship at a nearby water park, strengthening bonds in a joyful and relaxing environment. The day ended with a fellowship meal and a movie, adding to the spirit of unity and camaraderie.
The assembly concluded on 17th January with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. This final Mass was a moment of gratitude for God’s grace throughout the assembly. It was also a joyous occasion to celebrate the fifth priestly anniversaries of Frs. Madhu Babu and Marianna, whose dedication and service was appreciated by their fellow missionaries.
This gathering was much more than just a meeting. It was a time for spiritual renewal, reaffirming the synodal spirit and an opportunity to strengthen the unity of the Mill Hill Missionaries in our mission of service to God’s people. As we return to our respective ministries, I hope and pray that we carry with us a renewed commitment to living out the values of unity, discernment, safeguarding, and collaboration, staying faithful to the Gospel’s call in today’s world.
