Mission in the Digital Environment

When historical figures like Francis Xavier and Mother Cabrini embarked on their missions, they understood that conversion wasn’t immediate. It required patience, understanding, and immersion into the culture they sought to evangelize. Today, a similar approach is advocated for the digital realm.

José Manuel De Urquidi, founder of the Juan Diego Network, emphasizes that the internet isn’t just a tool; it’s a culture—a place of encounter similar to the territories explored by past missionaries. He challenges the Church not to fear this frontier but to engage with it boldly.

Under the visionary leadership of Msgr. Lucio Ruiz, the “digital synod” initiative mobilized over 2,000 “digital missionaries” to engage with diverse voices and perspectives, reflecting a commitment to listen and dialogue within the digital space.

During the synod, voices like Sr. Xiskya Valladares emphasized the importance of genuine dialogue and accompaniment within the digital realm, recognizing the wounds and needs of individuals seeking connection.

The synod’s synthesis document underscored this commitment, dedicating a chapter to “Mission in the Digital Environment,” proposing collaborative networks to unleash new energies for mission.

However, the journey doesn’t end with the synod. José Manuel De Urquidi stresses the need for bishops to identify and support digital missionaries within their dioceses, fostering their formation and accompanying them in their ministry.

The digital mission is a recognition of the internet as a new frontier for evangelization, where people seek meaning, love, and truth. By embracing this mission, the Church seeks to meet people where they are—online—ultimately leading them to encounter the love of God.
