As we prepare to celebrate World Mission Sunday tomorrow, 19 October 2025, with the theme “Missionaries of Hope Among All Peoples,” we take a moment to reflect on the dedicated work of missionaries around the world. In distant rural communities and busy city centres alike, these men and women continue to quietly plant, sustain, and nurture faith, hope, and love among people of every background, reminding us of the shared mission to bring compassion and unity to all.
Each of us has a part in the mission that Jesus has entrusted to us, for we are all called to be missionaries of hope. In a time when many people face hopelessness and despair, we are reminded that even the smallest act of kindness or encouragement can make a difference. By offering a little bit of hope through our words, actions, and care for others, we can help light the way for someone’s new beginning and become signs of hope in our world today.
Pope Benedict XVI often reminded the Church that proclaiming the Gospel is not an optional activity but lies at the very heart of its mission. He taught that this call comes directly from Christ’s command to “go and make disciples of all nations,” showing that sharing the Good News is an essential duty rooted in God’s universal love. Benedict explained that the Gospel is the true source of happiness and freedom, offering meaning and fulfilment beyond popularity or comfort. He also urged believers to give a credible witness through their lives, especially in a world marked by indifference and secularisation, living with simplicity and authenticity. In response to the growing loss of faith, he called for a “new evangelisation” to reawaken hearts even in traditionally Christian lands. Above all, Benedict affirmed that the Church exists to evangelise, and every Christian is invited to share the Gospel through prayer, genuine faith, and daily witness to Christ’s love.
