During his recent visit to Belgium Pope Francis, as is his wont, met with his Jesuit confrères from Belgium and The Netherlands.
Nicholas Sintobin, one of the participants, asked him: We want to transmit the richness of our spiritual life to all our fellow human beings, really to everyone, as you say: «Everyone, everyone, everyone». How can we reach this far-reaching level of inculturation?’
Pope Francis responded, concise and to the point: ‘Dare to take risks in communicating the faith’. He called for seeking out the periphery, where it is difficult, where there are great challenges. And he added: ‘What strikes me and what I always repeat is that Father Arrupe said in his last speech that we must work on the margins and at the same time never forget prayer. And the prayer of a Jesuit grows and deepens in border situations, in difficult situations. That is the beauty of our spirituality: having the courage to take risks’
