Nairobi, Kenya: Formation Mission Today

The annual formators workshop took place in Nairobi from 30th October to 4th November 2022 at the Dimesse retreat centre. It was under the synodality theme of, ‘Communion, Participation and Mission’ – he chose the twelve that they might be with him and that he might sent them, Mark 3;4. There were more than 100 participants in attendance from Kenya and beyond representing all the continents.

We had talks from speakers who have a wide range of experience in formation, mission and leadership. Among them was Rev. Pro.  Martin Owuor and Rev. Pro. Clement Majawa lecturers at the Catholic University. Sr. Pro. Lucy Lando, lecturer at Daystar University and Rev. Dr. Mary Gitau, lecturer at Tangaza University College. They came among us as brothers and sisters.

The topics covered ranged from Formation, Mission, Canon Law, Culture and Mass Media. Every day we had a chance to meet in smaller groups and discuss the concrete experiences we go through in our different formation houses. That was quite enriching.

On the opening day, we had mass celebrated by His Lordship Peter Chifukwa, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dedzo in Malawi. He is the youngest Bishop in Malawi. He had this simple straightforward message for us. ‘Formation is Mission proper. Despite the many challenges you encounter, please remain committed in this mission.’

At the end of the workshop, we had a small get-together with music and dance as we said the painful word ‘bye’ to each other. May God bless the work of all formator’s worldwide.
