Pope Leo has made two notable appointments in recent days that have strong connections for us Mill Hill Missionaries. One is in the Archdiocese of New York, where Mill Hill Missionaries have been working closely with the local Church over many years. The other is in the Diocese of Westminster in England, which is especially close to our hearts, as it was led by our Founder, Cardinal Vaughan, who became Archbishop on 29 March 1892 and later laid the foundation stone of Westminster Cathedral in 1895.
Pope Leo has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Vincent Gerard Nichols from the pastoral care of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Westminster and has appointed Bishop Charles Phillip Richard Moth, until now Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, as the new Metropolitan Archbishop of Westminster. Archbishop-elect Moth was born on 8 July 1958 in Chingola, Zambia, educated in Catholic schools in Kent, and trained for the priesthood in Wonersh and Ottawa, where he studied canon law. Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Southwark in 1982, he has served in a wide range of parish, tribunal, and diocesan roles, as well as as a military chaplain. He was appointed Bishop for the Armed Forces of Great Britain in 2009 and became Bishop of Arundel and Brighton in 2015.
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of New York and has appointed Bishop Ronald A. Hicks as the new metropolitan archbishop of New York, transferring him from the diocese of Joliet in Illinois. Bishop Hicks was born in Chicago in 1967, studied philosophy and theology in Illinois, and was ordained a priest in 1994 for the archdiocese of Chicago. He has served in parish ministry, seminary formation, charitable work in Mexico and El Salvador, and senior leadership roles, including vicar general of Chicago. Appointed auxiliary bishop of Chicago in 2018, he became bishop of Joliet in 2020 and now takes up his new role in New York.
