The poet Ilya Kaminsky is Ukrainian and deaf. His collection of poems entitled ‘Deaf Republic’ was finished before the war in Ukraine broke out. Yet he manages to evoke the war in a breathtaking way.
“Deaf people are not relegated to a silent world, as hearing people think. Deaf people don’t believe in silence. That is an invention of the hearers.” (Interview in Trouw 29.04.23)
