We hope you enjoy this latest St Joseph’s Advocate. Our aim is to offer you a sense and flavour of what is going on in the world of the Mill Hill Missionaries as we try to respond to Jesus’s command to “Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News.” (Mk 16,15)
Fr Tim Greenway, who is working with us at present in Cardonald after 60 years a Mill Hill missionary in India, offers us a first hand account of the challenges of offering the Gospel to an Indian culture that is so highly sophisticated and spiritual. You will find a fascinating account of how the caste system operates – and how it is a major challenge to the Christian missionary offering the Gospel.
Fr Innocent Wefon’s article Silence Kills brings home to us the dangers of remaining silent in the face of injustice and indifference. His article also highlights challenges both for Cameroonians and our Mill Hill missionaries of living and working in an area where armed conflict and killings are still very present as the struggle continues between the Amba Boys (fighting for an independent English-speaking Cameroon) and the Government forces. Fr Frank Smith died in January 2026 and I thought it good to offer you an article written by him in 1998 when he worked in Ecuador. He worked mostly in the slums where life was cheap and people’s attachment to Christianity was
very weak.
Fr Frank, a MHM priest, after encountering so much suffering and misery, decided to train as a nurse so that he could minister to the poor not just spiritually but physically as well. A great missionary.
From Kenya comes an article by Fr William Epiti MHM describing his work among the Massai highlighting the link between preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ and empowering the people among whom he lives and works. The Gospel is the “power of God to save”, says St Paul (Romans 1,16) Here St Paul is not just referring to what happens after our death but is stating an important truth about the power of God to liberate his children here and now from everything that keeps them unfree and diminishes their lives..

Fr Emmanuel Mbeh, a Mill Hill missionary from Cameroon, offers us a fascinating glimpse of what it is like to be a missionary from Africa working in in UK. Fr Emmanuel has a strong poetic streak in him – along with a great love of music and football.
Our Prize Draw project for 2026, Empowering her Future, aims at offering essential female hygienic products and school materials to school girls at St Francis Xavier RC school at Olooliamutia in Ngong diocese, Kenya. Fr Francis Epiti is the Mill Hill Missionary in charge of this project.
