Teach the heart to desire and love God

Today, we celebrate Ash Wednesday, a special day for Christians. It is a time for deep reflection, prayer, and setting out on the journey of Lent. Lent is a 40-day journey where we listen to God’s Word, pray, and do acts of kindness and self-denial. The Church helps us remember important moments in our salvation story during this time.

God created us to be His friends. However, when our first parents sinned, they broke this close relationship with God. Sin separated people from God and made it hard for us to live the way He planned. But Jesus came to save us. He gave His life so that our sins could be forgiven. Because of Him, we can be close to God again. The Bible tells us that Jesus died for our sins once and for all (1 Peter 3:18). When we are baptized, we are freed from sin and become children of God.

In the early Christian Church, Lent was a time to prepare for Baptism, which was celebrated at Easter. Even today, though many of us are already baptized, Lent helps us renew our faith and grow closer to God. It is a chance to become better Christians through prayer, sacrifice, and learning more about Jesus.

Lent is not just about giving up things for a short time; it is about real change in our hearts. Every Christian is called to turn away from sin and follow God more closely. Conversion is not something that happens only once. It is a journey that lasts our whole life. Each day, we must try to love God more and live as He wants us to.

St. Augustine once said that our lives should be full of the desire to be with God. Lent is a great time to remove things that take us away from Him. Jesus tells us in the Bible: “Repent and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15). This means turning away from bad habits and choosing to do good. We cannot do this alone—God helps us. He created us for Himself and wants us to be happy with Him.

To be converted means to seek God and follow Jesus. It does not mean just trying to make ourselves better. Instead, it means accepting that God is our Creator and trusting Him completely. True happiness comes from living with and for God. When we give up selfish desires and follow Jesus with love and trust, we find true joy. Mother Teresa used to say that Jesus must become “my All in all.” When we love Him completely, we are not afraid to give up things for Him.

Jesus showed the greatest love by dying on the Cross for us. He calls us to follow Him by carrying our own crosses. He says: “If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me” (Mark 8:34). Lent teaches us to value prayer, fasting, and helping others. These actions help us return to God and become better people.

As we begin Lent today, with the sign of ashes on our foreheads, let us remember Christ’s great love for us. Lent is a time to experience God’s mercy, listen to His Word, and receive strength from the Eucharist.

May Mary, who suffered with Jesus and rejoiced in His Resurrection, help us on this journey. May this Lent bring us closer to God and prepare us for the joy of Easter.

Wishing you all a blessed Lent!
