Trappists Elect New General Abbot

In the morning of February 11, Brother Bernardus Peeters ocso, was elected new general abbot of the Trappists. The Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance, as its official name is, is currently meeting in General Chapter is Assisi.

Dom Bernardus was born in Heerlen (The Netherlands) in 1968. He entered Tilburg in 1986, made his solemn profession in 1991, and was ordained in 1997. At the moment of his election, he was Abbot of the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven and chairman of the Conference of Dutch Religious.

Dom Bernardus is also closely connected (Father Immediate) with the Trappist nuns at the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningsoord, in Arnhem, The Netherlands, who happen to be our neighbours at Oosterbeek. The Abbey of Koningsoord was built on land acquired from the Mill Hill Missionaries and inaugurated in 2009.
