ST JOSEPH’S SEMINARY-NYENGA 1924-2024!!
As one entered Nyenga Seminary compound yesterday for the Centennial Mass, above the gate was plainly inscribed “QUANTUM POSSUM” loosely translated as “Do to the best of your ability..”!
Founded 100 years ago by the venerable Mill Hill Missionaries in Uganda under Bp John Reesinck MHM and dedicated to their Society Patron St Joseph on 19th March 1924 premised on the Gospel values of Faith, Love, Hope, Truth, Honesty & Hard work! The buildings, some as old as 97 but still strong – old but ever new like the Gospel!! We appreciate the Staff,Students and Alumni for their daily efforts!
As one moves along Katosi road towards Nyenga, a sign reads SOLOBERA in honour of a founding Staff Rev Fr Slabeela MHM. May all departed Founder staff and Alumni find peace in God!
A great nursery bed that has trained both Clergy from all over & outside Uganda notably; HG James Odongo, HG Cyprian K Lwanga, HG Denis Lote Kiwanuka, HL Joseph Mukwaya, HL Erasmus D Wandera, HL Joseph Oyanga & HL Tiberius Mugendi(Kenya) now all of blessed memory! Many living OBs notably Msgr JB Kauta, Rt Col Chris Mudoola, Hon Dr JC Muyingo among thousands still support their Alma Mater-Nyenga Seminary in line with the Roman adage “Lepus vetus a catulis suis pascitur”-‘An old rabbit feeds on its young ones’!
We remain eternally grateful to the Mill Hill Missionaries (my former formators & Parish Priests) for their source of inspiration, pastoral zeal and vision of establishing various institutions of formation & integral development in our various communities.
We thank Nyenga Seminary for accepting to be an elder sister to most Seminaries especially my Alma Mater -St Pius X-Nagongera Seminary Tororo (1953),in Uganda and beyond!
That thru St Joseph, the JOSEPH Model may continue being our guide! Amen
