A priest walks into a remote village in northern Kenya. The nearest medical centre is forty miles away. The school has no books. The community struggles to grow food as the climate shifts. He doesn’t arrive with easy answers  –  but he arrives. He stays. And slowly, with the community, the work begins.

That is what Mill Hill Missionaries do. And it’s only possible because people in the UK choose to support this work  –  through donations, through prayer, through telling others. This page is your starting point, wherever you are in that decision.

Who Are Mill Hill Missionaries?

Mill Hill Missionaries are a Catholic missionary society founded in the UK in 1866. Today, they serve communities across Africa, Asia, and the Americas  –  places where the Gospel message is still unfamiliar or where poverty, conflict, and isolation make daily survival a constant struggle.

From 1988, the society shifted its recruitment focus to Africa and Asia, opening formation centres in Kenya, Uganda, and India. This wasn’t a retreat from the mission  –  it was a deepening of it. The work now belongs to the whole Church, with missionaries from dozens of countries serving alongside each other. They run schools, lead parishes, mediate conflicts, and sit with families who have lost everything.

They’re not a large organisation. They don’t have celebrity endorsements or stadium fundraisers. What they have is presence: priests and brothers living for years in the same communities, speaking the same languages, facing the same challenges. That kind of presence costs money, time, and commitment  –  and it cannot be sustained without support.

Ways to Support Missionary Work

There are many main ways to help, and none of them requires you to be wealthy, retired, or already involved in church life. Each matters. Each makes a difference.

You can make a donation  –  either as a one-off gift or through regular monthly giving. If you’re a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid allows Mill Hill to claim an extra 25p for every pound you give at no cost to you.

Many supporters give through the Red Box scheme in partnership with Missio, a trusted and established route that has funded mission work for generations.

You can leave a legacy in your will or give in memory of someone you loved. Legacy gifts sustain Mill Hill’s presence in regions few other charities can reach  –  places where a single priest might serve fifteen villages across mountains or floodplains, where a school built today will educate children for decades. These gifts aren’t about grand monuments. They’re about staying power.

You can fundraise on Mill Hill’s behalf. Sponsored walks, workplace giving schemes, parish collections, community events  –  all of it helps. Missionary work runs on the enthusiasm of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in their own communities, then sending the proceeds to someone doing the same thing 4,000 miles away.

You can pray for the missions. This isn’t a token gesture. Missionaries rely on it. The annual Novena to St Joseph in March brings together thousands of supporters, and St Joseph’s Advocate magazine connects readers with specific prayer intentions each month. If you want to be involved but cannot give financially, this is how you stand with them.

You can spread the word. Share an article. Tell a friend. Invite a Mill Hill priest to speak at your parish. Mission Today magazine brings stories from the field directly to UK supporters  –  stories that deserve to be read and remembered, not lost in the noise of modern life.

Finally, if you’re discerning a vocation to missionary life, Mill Hill welcomes enquiries. It’s not for everyone, nor is it an escape or an adventure. It’s a calling  –  and for some, the only honest way to live. If you feel the calling, the door is open.

    Global Catholic Missions Impact

One Church, one body It is easy to think of the missions as someone else’s concern, a good cause far away that has little to do with life in a British parish. The Church does not see it that way, and never has. When a mother in northern Cameroon cannot get her child to a […]

Ready to Support Missionary Work?

One family in Kenya kept their daughter in school because a stranger in Birmingham set up a monthly direct debit. One village in Pakistan now has a library because someone in Glasgow left a legacy gift. These aren’t grand claims. They’re ordinary facts about how missionary work is funded and how communities change when someone decides to help.

Not everyone is ready to donate today. That’s absolutely fine. Prayer matters. Telling others matters. Reading and learning matters. All of it builds the network of support that keeps missionaries in the field and children in classrooms.

When you’re ready to take the next step, everything you need is on our donations page.
